DON'T QUIT

http://learnteachlove.blogspot.com/

DON'T QUIT
"When things go wrong as they sometimes will;
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill;
When the funds are low, and the debts are high
And you want to smile, but have to sigh;
When care is pressing you down a bit-
Rest if you must, but do not quit.
Success is failure turned inside out;
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt;
And you can never tell how close you are
It may be near when it seems so far;
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit-
It's when things go wrong that you must not quit."

i love her mission...

Then one day, I picked up a book that totally changed the course of my life.

M Scott Peck's The Road Less Travelled.

I realised blaming everyone and everything will not change the situations nor will it solve any issue that I face in life. From the book I've read, I realised that the only way things will change is when I think positive and initiate action to overcome any obstacles or challenges along the way. I can not sit around, twiddle my thumbs and wait for a miracle to happen. To be a great teacher, one must be a good learner. I've learned from my colleagues and my own students on how to improve my teaching methodology and make learning more meaningful for my students.

I also learn that it is not easy to initiate a change, to do something totally out of your comfort zone. When I started doing the action research for the first time, I was at first sceptical on its effectiveness. When I realised how the project I did had maximised my students' enthusiasm in learning by leaps and bounds, I was motivated. When I came across this blog, I was totally in awe of Kak Rahmah's dedication in teaching. Her positive attitude and optimism somewhat fueled me to emulate her fervour in teaching. She is my role model and I am glad that she is kind enough to share her knowledge with me. She triggered me to ride the unchartered waters and I dared myself to present paper at international conferences. I had inhibition of course (who would want to listen to me? / I'm not good enough) but I told myself, you got nothing to lose. The biggest demon is insecurities , to convince yourself that you need to perservere regardless of whatever criticism you might receive from others. Life is not all about perfection, it's all about progress.

It is inevitable to deny that it is a big responsibility to be a Guru Cemerlang/Master Teacher. People have expectations upon you, watching your every moves and wanting mind-blowing results and outcomes. Personally, I hope to learn more and improve on my teaching skills. I hope to network with more teachers and nurture my students' love for learning. I would also like to thank all of the followers & visitors of this humble blog. I have an ongoing mission : learn to teach with love :)

Biarpun perit pedih tersiksa
Kerana umat kau tempuhi jua

Akhlakmu tinggi kan kami jejaki
Sifatmu sempurna pelengkap peribadi

Engkau taburkan pengorbananmu
Untuk umatmu yang tercinta
Biar terpaksa tempuh derita
Cekalnya hatimu menempuh ranjaunya

Tak terjangkau tinggi pekertimu
Tidak tergambar indahnya akhlakmu
Tidak terbalas segala jasamu
Sesungguhnya engkau rasul mulia
Tabahkan hatimu menempuh dugaan
Mengajar erti kesabaran

(riwayat Tirmidzi)

wow this is sad.... gaduh in blog...

My daughter's convocation was jubilated by us, the family members. However there was an incident I now put behind me and enjoy life as if nothing was ruffled.

Then this kind BUT very slow reader came in and slapped an unsavoury remark, even after the sadness of a parent was subsiding and cooled to norm.

I call this reader, a slow sluggish unsavoury character.

Here is the chide:

I can't keep my feelings restrained after reading the writings from a, maybe, well educated father from, maybe, a highly civic minded society from the south. Now we can realise that sometimes the way our teenagers act and think may come from their parents as well. No wonder some of our students have the attitude of 'everything must be tiptop for them' right from the start they enter UiTM until they come for their convos. Its the attitude of some well to do parents who always wanted to be treated with 1st class service as if they are the King but yet still send their children to an institution where the primary objective is to transform not so rich children to become successful in life. How can his daughter have the endurance in life when the father could not even stand the endurance of attending a convo for just a few a hours? With all the fuss he made on UiTM with his writings in the blog, I just hope and pray that his daughter will become successful in life.

And here is the reply:

Thank you for your prayer Mr/Dr./Prof/Datuk/Puan/ Drs/Nenek/xxx Anonymous. You said it well. And the same prayer goes to your children and your progenies too for Allah will return favour. I am sure you too have children or even grandchildren, unless you are barren, thus you do not understand the feelings of parents vis-a-vis a convocation.
BTW, why be anonymous?
Is this a culture from the highly civic minded society from the central region of this Bolehland?
And your comprehension of English Language must have smelt vomit, for NOT ONCE did I mention about asking for a 1st class service.
If, being in the same hall as their graduating children is a first class service, then you are saying that, most universities in this Bolehland is first class, and UiTM is 2nd class!!!
Blasphemous!
You are condemning the university you are purportedly upholding!
My 2 cents worth is still valid. Your comprehension of English as a Language spews sewer!
And this is not an ANONYMOUS reply.
Read my lips.
Not an ANONYMOUS reply.

But Anonymous and the many more foul-English readers out there, yet to be seen, are hilarious. This could be the tip of the ice-berg Datuk. Be prepared. Pity our children who are taught by such lecturers [who are not from the south of the country as mentioned by Anonymous].

Mohd Nawi Derahman::> Sherry thank you. Thank you for being understanding. Most parents understood the context very well, unless they are BARREN and have no children, thus could not relate to a convocation very well (skewed personality).
Thanks Sherry.

Abdullah Mohd Nawi::> My comment on your blog Dad:

I really think our anonymous guest has misconstrued the meaning the blogposts and the frustrations of a parent who only wanted to be in the same room as his child during her once in a lifetime convocation for a first degree (future ones not including, and they would not be for the first degree).

If other major universities are able to let the parents be in the same hall as their children during this momentous event, wouldn't one expect the same courtesy from another major university?

Somehow, I don't think our anonymous guest appears to be able to differentiate between the fact that even through all the difficulties endured during the convocations (I'm very sure my father, colleagues, and myself included as we have been to quite a few, from varying universities), there wouldn't have been a peep about all this if it was made worthwhile. In this case, a parent being able to see his child, and a child being able to see her parents, during this very special occasion.

It might be a good idea to revisit the post, and actually try to understand what a person means, before beginning a tirade of thinly veiled insults that are hidden under the false guise of civility.

My father's comments are scathing, yes I do admit, but sir/madam, your thinly veiled insults are very personal in nature, and one does not attack a person for his views. One debates the views.

I would also like to add, sir/mdm, that a large number of our family is proud to be affiliated with UiTM (or ITM), and we are extremely proud of them.

Also, as members of the academic fraternity, we are proud of what UiTM is doing for the country, as we all benefit from it.

The only matter debated here, sir/mdm, is that a parent was not permitted the courtesy of seeing his child receive her scroll, and not asking for a first class, red carpet treatment.

I ask, was this such a crime that such provocative and very personal attacks be made?

I hate it when someone talks about setting the right attitude and example to our students when HE/SHE/IT slink behind a name like "Anonymous"! You must be one who was educated abroad and return home to be a Master Coward. What a waste of PUBLIC MONEY! And that is a great example you are showing to the students?

Ahh my remarks were scathing?
Yes.
And I don't mince words!

(Surah Al-Isra : 36).

Quran Surah Al: Isra : 62-65

Hundreds stranded in snow in Scotland

Britain, which last year shivered through its coldest winter in 30 years, has not seen such widespread early snowfall since 1993.

Motorists in Scotland were told to stay at home after hundreds of drivers were stranded overnight after snow and freezing temperatures brought more chaos to travellers in northern Britain.

Strathclyde, Lothian and Borders and Central Scotland police forces advised against travel on Tuesday as deep snow and icy conditions left main roads impassable.

"We are advising motorists again not to travel unless the journey is absolutely essential," said Chief Superintendent Allan Moffat.

"We are extremely keen to prevent the experiences over the last 24 hours where we have had many people stranded in their vehicles for lengthy periods."

He said the gritting measures did not work when temperatures fell below minus 10C.

Temperatures in Scotland dropped well below freezing overnight to as low as minus 18 Celsius (-0.4 Fahrenheit), and more heavy snow trapped many drivers in their vehicles while others abandoned their cars.

Scotland's Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson said the authorities had been dealing with what police had described as "unprecedented conditions."

"It's certainly not the case that we've managed to deal with the problem in a way which is acceptable and I very much regret that," he told BBC radio, adding his staff had done an "excellent job."

"I'm sorry that people have experienced the inconvenience."

Media reported that 150 pupils, parents and staff were forced to spend the night in a South Lanarkshire school after the conditions meant they were unable to get home.

The M876, M80 and M8 motorways were all badly affected and police said they had helped stranded drivers get hotel accommodation or receive hot drinks and food.

All the vehicles that were abandoned on the M876 have now been removed, police said, although much of the motorway along with parts of the M9 and M80 remained closed.

However, there was better news for air passengers as Glasgow and Edinburgh airports were both open on Tuesday morning.

Hundreds stranded in snow chaos

Hundreds of drivers stranded overnight in freezing temperatures are still battling to get home as police launched a huge operation to free up miles of gridlock.

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21/20101207/tuk-hundreds-stranded-in-snow-chaos-6323e80.html

Some motorists were stuck in their vehicles for more than 15 hours as Scotland bore the brunt of a fresh wave of ice and snow which left several major routes impassable.

Police across the country's busy central belt warned people not to travel unless it was "absolutely essential" after temperatures plunged as low as minus 17C (1.4F) and hampered gritting efforts.

The deluge on Monday - which appeared to take the authorities by surprise - saw people sleep in their cars or abandon them on the highway as motorways and A roads clogged up. Around 100 children were also forced to sleep at their school after the bad weather prevented pupils, parents and staff from getting home.

North-east Scotland and north-west England are facing more snow, with widespread icy roads expected up and down the country thanks to the freezing conditions.

At least nine people have so far died in the big freeze, with an elderly man found dead in snow at a Lincolnshire caravan park the latest victim.

Temperatures plummeted to minus 13C (8.6F) in Edinburgh and minus 11C (12.2F) in Glasgow overnight, reaching minus 16.7C (1.9F) in parts of the Highlands. Parts of Yorkshire and South Wales also saw minus 14C (6.8F).

Glasgow and Edinburgh Airports were open after closing on Monday due to the weather conditions, but officials warned travellers to check with their airlines. Belfast International and London City Airports also warned of delays and cancellations due to fog and freezing weather.

On the railways, the East Coast line between London and Edinburgh was still running a reduced service, and some Northern Rail services in Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire were cancelled.

Brendan Jones, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said temperatures were due to rise from Thursday through the weekend thanks to a shift in the wind direction: "At the moment, temperatures are struggling to get above freezing, but by Thursday most places are going to be above zero - 4C (39.2F) or 5C (41F) across large parts of the country. Many places will have a frost-free night."

Scottish drivers trapped in heavy snow

Hundreds of motorists in Scotland were stranded on Tuesday following a freezing night spent in their cars on the country's snowbound roads.

The country's busiest routes became impassable late Monday in bitterly cold conditions, forcing drivers and passengers in more than 500 vehicles to sleep in their cars.

Scotland's parliament held a crisis meeting as police battled to reach trapped motorists.

Stewart Stevenson, the Scottish transport minister, said the country was in the grip of the "worst snow and ice conditions since the 1960s."

Many parts of Britain have been hit by the country's earliest widespread snowfalls for 17 years.

Around 150 pupils, teachers and parents spent the night in a school in Hamilton, central Scotland, after the heavy snow made it too dangerous for them to make their way home.

Glasgow and Edinburgh airports reopened after a short shutdown because of the weather.

Strathclyde, Lothian and Borders and Central Scotland police forces advised people not to travel on Tuesday unless their journeys were essential as deep snow and icy conditions have left roads treacherous.

"Due to the extremely cold temperatures experienced across the central belt (of Scotland) overnight, the gritting operation that has been carried out will not have had a significant impact on the ice that has built up on roads across the region," they said.

Temperatures in Scotland dropped well below freezing overnight, and more heavy snow trapped many drivers in their vehicles while others abandoned their cars.

Pupils, parents and staff were forced to spend the night in a South Lanarkshire school after the conditions meant they were unable to get home.

The M876, M80 and M8 motorways were all badly affected and police said they had helped stranded drivers get hotel accommodation or hot drinks and food.

However, Glasgow and Edinburgh airports have both reopened.

Britain, which last year shivered through its coldest winter in 30 years, has not seen such widespread early snowfall since 1993, closing thousands of schools and causing travel chaos up and down the country.

Fresh snow showers and sub-zero temperatures will continue to blight Britain as the icy weather that has gripped the country over the past week shows little sign of easing.

Around 15cm of snow is expected on higher grounds with strong 30mph north-easterly winds making the temperatures feel as low as -7C in parts of the UK.

Schools are expected to remain shut and transport routes blocked with forecasters warning that the onslaught of Arctic weather will not show signs of letting up until Friday.

Met Office forecaster David Price said: "It will remain bitterly cold today with the strong north-easterly winds continuing to bring snow showers and making temperatures feel as low as minus six or seven degrees. There will be fresh snowfall across the majority of the country, with the only areas really escaping being the Midlands, the far south west of England and the west and north-west of Scotland."

Mr Price predicted that an average of between 0.8in (2cm) and 2in (5cm) of snow will fall across the UK on Wednesday, with 4in (10cm) to 6in (15cm) falling in higher areas. Temperatures are also expected to struggle to get past 0C with maximums of just 2C.

Mr Price said the snowy conditions will continue throughout Thursday adding to the existing levels that have accumulated over the past week.

"On Friday we should an expect a reprieve from the showers. However, it will remain extremely cold and the snow will be back over the weekend," added the weather expert.

Gatwick Airport was also closed with all departures and arrivals halted until further notice due to the adverse weather conditions. Airport spokeswoman Sarah Baranowski said the runway was closed at 10.30pm on Tuesday and ground staff working throughout the night had not been able to clear the settling snow.

Severe weather warnings were on Wednesday in place for the whole of Scotland, with widespread icy roads and heavy snow expected in central and south westerly areas. Warnings were also in place for northern England, the south coast and parts of Wales as the UK braces itself for more Arctic temperatures.

Gemma Plumb, forecaster for MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said snow drifts were reported in East Anglia and Suffolk on Wednesday morning as a result of the strong winds. A low of -19.8C was also taken in Altnaharra, in the Highlands, with temperatures not expected to break 0C in Scotland.
