The came in their thousands. From Tokyo to Berlin, from London to New York, gadget fans queued for hours around the world to get their hands on the new iPhone 4 which went on sale today.

Apple's flagship Regent Street store in central London opened its doors early at 7am to deal with the expected demand for the new phone.

And the first eager customers had unfurled their sleeping bags outside the shop shortly before midnight last night.

The high demand comes despite the fact the prices charged to British shoppers appear to be significantly higher than those in the USA.
