Lancaster Royal Grammar School's position as one of the top state schools in the country

to go or not to go to grammar school?????

One of the UK's best state boarding schools, we offer affordable boarding to 200 of our pupils and have a thriving Sixth Form of 350. We challenge the brightest boys in the North West of England, along with boarders from further afield, to fulfil their potential.

Our aims are simple:

  • to provide the highest standards of academic achievement and behaviour
  • to instil a respect for knowledge and learning
  • to foster a sense of community, in which each individual's contribution is valued
  • to encourage respect for others, for moral values and above all, self respect

Our exam results are consistently high and we have a national reputation for sporting excellence. We are particularly proud of the warmth of the relationship between pupils and staff. I hope you will be inspired to come and see for yourself what makes LRGS special for all us of who work and study here. I look forward to meeting you.

LRGS has a long tradition of providing excellent opportunities for boys to excel academically as well as a national reputation for sporting and extra-curricular achievement. This selective state grammar school of around 1000 boys aged 11–18, including 200 boarders and a thriving sixth form of over 300, achieves consistently high academic standards supported by a strong and effective pastoral system.

“An outstanding school” Ofsted 2007

A wide variety of sport and extra curricular activities play an important part in educational life at LRGS, with teams regularly appearing in regional and national competitions. All boys are encouraged to become involved in a broad range of indoor and outdoor activities. Ofsted described LRGS as being "enriched by an exceptional range of sporting, social and cultural opportunities."

As a maintained school, education at LRGS remains free. Parents only pay for the boarding element. Families are able to choose full-time or weekly boarding to suit their needs. With boarding fees of just £2,700 per term, this represents tremendous value for money. The boarding community at LRGS is readily recognised as the heart of the school, helping boys achieve remarkable success in all areas of school life.
