Part of the series Healthier Living
Being located in a run down area, Skerton Community High School in Lancaster has been through troubled times but has now been transformed for the better by embracing the National Healthy Schools Programme.
New initiatives have been integral to turning the school's fortunes around, while helping to bring about improved teacher-pupil relations. The school also has a thriving nurture group to assist those pupils with behavioural and emotional issues.
Amongst the healthy eating initiatives, there is a cook and eat scheme involving students making meals, which they then take home.
The school has already staged a number of bike to school days, and they now plan to become the first school in England to provide free bikes for all their students, with the help of grants.
