Through my work as a Trainer and more recently as a Researcher into Releasing Emotional Baggage I have met thousands of people who are living their lives based on old outdated thoughts and perceptions from their past. Which is a bit like trying to wear the same clothes that you wore when you were five years old, or making a meal from last year’s leftovers! Neither would make you very comfortable nor be very pleasant. None of us would do any of those through choice, yet millions of us are living our lives in this way, by basing our lives on outdated thoughts and perceptions.

Are you one of them? I know I was!

Research by Dr Daniel Amen shows that we have approximately 60,000 thoughts a day. That is one thought every second during every waking hour! (Just for reference there are 86,400 seconds in a day). Of those 60,000 thoughts 95% of them are the same thoughts that we had yesterday and the day before, and the day before that. Our minds are like a stuck record, repeating the same song over and over again (what if you don’t like that song?).

To delve into those figures a little deeper; of those 95% of thoughts that are the same as yesterday and the day before that and the day before that – 80% are negative! So out of 60,000 thoughts each day more than 45,000 of them are negative! Dr Amen calls those thoughts Automatic Negative Thoughts or ANT’s for short (Ah we have found the Ants).

Did you also know that in an average dictionary (just over 30,000 words) there are only 1705 words that can be interpreted to be positive, strong, powerful, or stimulating? That is just over 5% of the words available to use. Yet in the same dictionary there are 5890 words that can be seen as negative, disempowering, belittling, sniping, griping or critical!

It is no wonder that it is easier, for so many of us, to get stuck in the “rut” of life that we know – even though it is often uncomfortable and unfulfilling. (Think back to that quote by Einstein about insanity)

Now back to the Ants and Cats. I don’t know about you but I didn’t like the thought of all of those ANTs (Automatic Negative Thoughts) running round in my head. So I set out to find a means of removing them in an organic and healthy way. In the process of my research I discovered CATs – Capability Affirming Thoughts, in other words ‘positive thoughts’.

The CATs led to the creation of a 15 second visualization that can be used again and again, anywhere at any time. This one simple staple ‘ingredient’ quite literally has changed not only my life, but the lives of countless clients.

The Visualization

Imagine a kitten (yep – that’s the CAT), small, fluffy and full of playfulness. It sees an ANT crawling along the floor. (I’m not into animal/insect cruelty, I promise). What will the kitten do? It will play with the ANT until the ANT is gone.

When to use the Visualization – Each time you catch yourself having one of those sneaky little ANTs, congratulate yourself for being aware, then think of the fluffy Kitten playing with the ANT until it is gone.” Just like magic you are smiling, the ANT has gone and you are breaking the chain of those repetitive thoughts ))

ANTs & CATs are a key step to releasing and letting go of The Emotional Baggage that can weigh down your life.
